This article details what to expect during a fully remote online closing with Proof.
Check out Hybrid closing overview if some documents will be wet-signed.
What signers need
- U.S. Social Security number for knowledge-based authentication
- Government-issued photo ID for credential analysis
- A valid email address
- A computer with audio/video capabilities
Signer experience overview
- Signers click Sign documents now in the email from Proof.
-
Create a Proof account by entering a password when prompted.
-
Review the documents and click Sign Now to sign some of their documents before the notary meeting. Click Join Meeting on the documents that require a notary.
-
Verify identity. With the help of third-party public records databases, the Proof platform uses (but never retains) personal information to create knowledge check questions tailored specifically to each signer. Then the signer captures the front and back of a government-issued photo ID. These security measures are required by law to deter fraud. Proof does not set these standards.
-
Enable camera and microphone. The Proof platform asks signers for access to the camera and microphone for the meeting.
-
Meet with a notary. If the organization who sent the document package is using one of their own in-house notaries, the meeting time and date will be arranged. If not, signers wait for an on-demand notary from the Notarize Network to pick up their call. Once connected, the notary walks the signers through the process of reviewing and signing their documents online instead of in person.
-
Complete the notarization. When the notary meeting is done, the signer may be asked for payment depending on the organization's settings.
- Pay for the transaction. The final cost depends on the organization that sent the transaction. Some organizations may choose to pay for the transaction, so you don't have to. If you're not sure, reach out to your contact at the business who sent you the documents to confirm. Proof accepts Google Pay, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express), debit cards, and bank transfers.
