Renew or Update Your Certificate

The renewal process is the same whether you're renewing an existing Proof Digital Certificate or updating from an IdenTrust certificate. The process takes up to 15 minutes, plus up to 3 business days for the Network Integrity team to review your account before you can accept calls again.

Have the following ready before you begin:

  • Government-issued ID (driver's license, passport, passport card, permanent resident card, or state ID)
  • Supplemental ID — only required if you fail over to a trusted referee
  • A device with a camera for your selfie

See the full list of acceptable documents in the Quick Start Guide.

⚠️
Once you begin this process, your account will be non-compliant until your certificate is generated and reviewed. Plan to complete this at least 3 business days before you need to notarize.

When your certificate is due for renewal, a pop-up appears when you log in — select Verify identity to begin. If the pop-up doesn't appear, follow the steps below.

  1. Select your initials in the upper right corner of your account.
  2. Select Notary profile from the dropdown menu.
  3. Navigate to the Proof Digital Certificate section.
  4. Select Verify identity.
  5. Select Reverify identity.
  6. Verify your information is correct and matches your state commission exactly. Provide your birth date and address.
  7. Select your country and primary ID type, then accept the biometric consent.
  8. Capture your ID — mobile phones typically produce the best image quality. Scan the QR code or select Send SMS to continue on your phone.
  9. Follow the prompts to capture your selfie.
  10. Once identity verification is complete (automated or via trusted referee), continue to your dashboard to generate your certificate.

Revoke Your Certificate

You may want to revoke your certificate if:

  • You're no longer using the Proof platform.
  • Your account or device has been compromised.
  • You're changing your name or email address.
⚠️
Any change to your name or email automatically revokes your certificate, since your certificate is tied to both. If you're changing your name, have your primary and supplemental IDs ready to re-verify your identity. You will not be able to perform notarizations until you verify your identity again and generate a new certificate.

If You're Having Trouble with Identity Verification

If the automated system can't verify your identity, you'll be routed to a trusted referee. You have unlimited attempts. The most common causes of a failover:

  • Your ID has expired or is not within the required date range.
  • Images are not readable (blurry, unfocused, or cut off).
  • The name in your account doesn't match your ID.
+ General Tips
  • Use your mobile device — it typically captures higher-quality photos.
  • Take photos head-on, not at an angle.
  • Make sure photos are in focus and well-lit — move near a window or turn on the flash.
  • Make sure your address is not a P.O. Box.
  • Confirm your IDs are valid and your name in Proof matches exactly.
+ Selfie Tips
  • Center yourself on the screen.
  • Look directly at the camera while capturing the selfie.
+ Phone Number Tips

If you're having trouble with phone number verification in a trusted referee meeting, you'll need to provide a second form of identification — it cannot be the same as your primary form. Acceptable options:

  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • State ID card
  • Passport card
  • Permanent resident card
  • Utility bill (dated within 6 months)
  • Credit or debit card statement (dated within 6 months)
  • Bank account statement (dated within 6 months)

This second form of identification can only be uploaded during a trusted referee meeting.

+ Florida Driver's License Tips

Florida driver's licenses are prone to glare. If you're having trouble, try photographing your license in direct sunlight.

Summary Checklist

  • Start your renewal at least 3 business days before you need to notarize — your account will be non-compliant during review.
  • Have your government-issued ID, supplemental ID, and a camera-equipped device ready before starting.
  • Changing your name or email automatically revokes your certificate — re-verify your identity to generate a new one.
  • If automated verification fails, use a mobile device in good lighting and take photos head-on — you have unlimited attempts.
