The short answer: If you have in-house notaries (IHNs) and need to prevent them from accepting calls or creating new transactions, you can temporarily disable their account in the Users area. Disabling is reversible; deactivating is permanent and requires the notary to complete onboarding again.
Which Notary Accounts Can Be Changed
A notary's account can only be disabled after their profile is marked as compliant and able to take calls. However, it can be deactivated regardless of status.
If the notary has not yet been marked as compliant but you urgently need to enable or disable them, and none of your admins or owners are available, contact support.
How It Works
Whether you disable or deactivate the notary's account, they can still access their account to view their journal as required by law — but they cannot accept new calls or send new transactions. Their account will display a message indicating they have been disabled.
You will retain access to all of their transactions regardless of whether the account is disabled or deactivated.
Disable an In-House Notary
- Click Users from the menu on the left.
- Select In-house notaries from the menu on the left to filter the list to notaries only.
- Find the notary you'd like to disable.
- Click the toggle under the Accepting Calls column to the OFF position to temporarily disable that notary.
This change takes effect immediately. The notary will receive an email and see a message in their account that their account has been disabled.
To permanently deactivate an in-house notary's account, read Deactivate an existing user's account.
Summary Checklist
- Confirm the notary's profile is marked as compliant before attempting to disable (deactivation has no status requirement).
- Go to Users → In-house notaries and find the notary's account.
- Toggle the Accepting Calls column to OFF to temporarily disable the notary.
- Confirm the notary receives the disable notification and their account shows the disabled message.
- If a permanent change is needed, follow the Deactivate an existing user's account article instead.
