Audience: Everyone

The short answer: Most camera problems are caused by a blocked lens, a missing browser permission, or the wrong camera being selected. Work through the scenario below that matches what you're seeing.

If the Proof site isn't loading or behaving unexpectedly, start with Device Setup Troubleshooting before working through the steps below.

Video Is Blank or Black

If the video feed is black or blank:

  • Check whether something is blocking the camera lens — a shutter, privacy cover, or sticker.

If you see an error message below the video feed, the browser doesn't have permission to access your camera. To fix it:

  1. Click the settings icon in the address bar (next to the URL).
  2. Make sure the camera is set to Allow for Proof.

Video Shows the Wrong View

If the video feed shows the wall, ceiling, or another unintended part of the room:

  1. Check whether your device has more than one camera — most phones and tablets have both a front and rear camera.
  2. Open the dropdown menu below the video feed.
  3. Select the correct camera from the list.

If you're on a MacBook with an iPhone nearby, your Mac may automatically connect to the iPhone camera via Continuity Camera.

  1. Follow Apple's instructions to turn off Continuity Camera and switch back to the built-in camera.

External Camera Doesn't Appear in the List

If your external webcam doesn't appear in the camera dropdown, the browser may not have detected it. Try the following:

  1. Confirm the camera is plugged in and powered on.
  2. Refresh your browser — this updates the list of connected devices.
  3. If the camera still doesn't appear, switch to a built-in camera if one is available.

Summary Checklist

  • Check for a physical lens cover or privacy shutter blocking the camera.
  • Confirm the browser has camera permission for Proof in the address bar settings.
  • Select the correct camera from the dropdown below the video feed.
  • If using an external webcam, confirm it's connected and refresh the browser.
  • On a MacBook near an iPhone, turn off Continuity Camera to use the built-in camera.
